The Fraud of Christmas

Season greetings to you all my beloved Rooney Maniacs.

So we reach yet another christmas period. Ah yes time to waste money on pointless gifts people don't actually want, eat too much, drink too much and be forced to sit in and watch ridiculous soap storylines as you can't actually leave your house due to the fact everywhere is frigging closed.

As you may guess i'm not a fan of christmas.

It didn't used to be this way. Often in October i would begin my 'christmas song period' where i would sit in my room playing festive tunes. It would become a well known time in my house just after my birthday were the angelic voice of dean martin could be heard. I used to love the cheeriness of the classic christmas tunes. Christmas was a time to get fine gifts and generally skive of school for 2 weeks.

But then it all changed back in 2003. Suddenly I was spending more money than I was getting back in gifts. I questioned what was going on with my parents who replied that i was 'getting older' now and had to realise i wouldnt have the same amount lavished on me. That christmas was a time for giving.

They were right. That's the time then i started to hate christmas. Not because i'm tight with money and don't like giving (which is kind of true anyway) but the fact i was now old. The stupidity of christmas shone through as a blackhole to my wallet. Buying socks for people. Or alcohol which they'll later just piss out on anyway. It made me question something. What is the point in christmas?

"It's a happy time!! Cheer up stop being a scrooge!!"

No. Is it really a happy time? Suddenly for one day we forget our troubles and sit about with extended family members we rarely see and don't have anything in common with celebrating a holiday which has nothing to do with religious events anymore but more a holiday for greedy money making shops. Are we all falling for the trap of christmas?

"i don't have much money, in fact i'm being made bankrupt in the new year, but i spend a load on christmas! you have to!"

More fool you. Well done for giving the money eating consumer market have a nice bonus this year.

We celebrate the birth of Jesus by drinking, buying stupid presents and generally just repeating the same day every bloody year. What is the point? It might be because i can't be bothered with any of the cliche bullshit as i'm a bitter, moody and angry individual these days or it could be that the recent events of my life have allowed me to wake up to the sheer crappery of this holiday and how anyone who doesn't see this is a moron...

But enough of my self absorbed bullshit...

Merry christmas to you all Rooney Maniacs. Whether I agree with this 'day' or not let me hope you all have a nice day...

Thanks to the nice text messages i've received. 14 messages so far today. People must really like this day for some reason...
